Introduction

Anulom Vilom, also called Alternate Nostril Breathing, is one of the most widely practiced and effective pranayama techniques in yoga. It balances the Ida and Pingala nadis, the left and right energy channels, harmonizing the Heart Chakra (Anahata), Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura), and supporting overall energy flow throughout the body.

This practice promotes calmness, mental clarity, and emotional balance while regulating the breath, reducing stress, and enhancing vitality.

How to Practice Anulom Vilom:

Sit Comfortably: Sit in Sukhasana, Padmasana, or on a chair with a straight spine.

Position Your Hand: Use the right thumb to close the right nostril and the ring finger to close the left nostril.

Start Breathing:

Close the right nostril and inhale slowly through the left nostril.

Close the left nostril and exhale slowly through the right nostril.

Inhale through the right nostril, then close it and exhale through the left nostril.

Repeat: Start with 5–10 rounds and gradually increase with practice.

Physical Benefits:

Improves lung capacity and oxygenation

Regulates blood pressure and heart rate

Supports healthy respiratory and nervous systems

Detoxifies the body and improves circulation

Enhances digestion and metabolism

Energetic & Spiritual Benefits:

Balances Energy Channels: Harmonizes Ida (cooling) and Pingala (heating) nadis

Heart Chakra (Anahata): Promotes emotional balance, love, and compassion

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): Activates inner fire, confidence, and willpower

Calms the Mind: Reduces stress, anxiety, and restlessness

Supports Meditation: Prepares the mind for deeper focus and spiritual practice

Mindful Tip:

Anulom Vilom teaches harmony and balance. Each alternate breath stabilizes the flow of prana, bringing calmness, clarity, and equilibrium to the body and mind. It is ideal as a daily practice, especially in the morning or before meditation.

Practice Tips:

Practice on an empty stomach for best results.

Keep your spine straight and shoulders relaxed.

Focus on slow, smooth, and even breathing.

Avoid straining; breathe comfortably.

Anulom Vilom Pranayama is more than a breathing exercise. It is a tool to balance energy, calm the mind, and awaken inner vitality. Regular practice nurtures harmony, emotional stability, and a deeper connection to your own life force.
